I'm constantly having one-night stands. I'm not really into having relationships but I just want sex all of the time. How do you get treated for sex addiction? 'I am a sex addict' has become an everyday term in our society but for people who really are sex addicts it is anything but a laughing matter. True sexual addiction destroys lives and while treatable it can be as destructive as any other type of major addiction. The highly respected Mayo Clinic in America defines sexual addiction as : "Having an overwhelming need for sex to where you are so intensely preoccupied with this need that it interferes with your job and your relationships...You may spend inordinate amounts of time in sexually related activities and neglect important aspects of your day-to-day life in social, occupational and recreational areas. You may find yourself failing repeatedly at attempts to reduce or control your sexual activities or desires." I work with many young women on this topic and when we dig below the surface we often find that yes they do have issues that are causing them to regularly ‘act out’. But are they addicted as such? Usually not. If, however you really are a sex addict there are several ways to deal with the issue. Individual counselling is one. Clinics are another. However I would suggest that you start at SAA which is the branch of AA that deals with sexual addiction. I have listed their website below which has a questionnaire that will help you determine what your status really is. They also have online meetings if you are not comfortable about the traditional 12-Step meeting setup. If after looking at the site you realise that you don’t really fall into this category then I would say try getting a referral to a traditional counsellor. Often it is just about doing a bit of work on self-esteem. Learning how to set boundaries. Learning how to raise the value you place on distributing your ‘favours’. Setting standards for what you expect and not settling for less. A couple of visits might just put you on the right track. Good luck.
