NUREMBERG

NURNBERG - city
Altstadt

- Nuremberg’s old town stretches from the Hauptbahnhof right up to the Hauptmarkt. Notable buildings in the old town include the Mauthalle (the old customs house) and Nassauer Haus (the oldest medieval townhouse in the city). Probably the most famous building is the Heilig Geist Spital (The Hospital of the Holy Spirit), pictured left, which sits above the river Pegnitz. It dates back to the fifteenth century, and is probably the most photographed building in the city. It now houses one of the best restaurants in the city centre.

Ehemaliges Reichsparteitagsgelände

- The former Nazi Party Rally grounds and remaining structures sit in the Zeppelinfeld area of the city. The only remaining structures are the main stand, used as the platform from which the Nazi leaders addressed the grounds. The Grosse Strasse (Parade Road) was originally designed to run the 2 kilometres from Congress Hall, and is now used for cyclists and skateboarders.

NURNBERG - the tiergarten
The Tiergarten

– The zoo has a separate children’s zoo, with plenty of opportunities to pet the animals

Handwekerhof

– The Craftsmen Courtyard is a throwback to medieval times. The authentic feel of a village from bygone times has been preserved with the original walls and towers still intact, surrounding small craft workshops, souvenir shops, bars and restaurants.

Dokumentationszentrum

- The Documentation Centre Party Rally Grounds offers an overview of the history of the Grounds, the history of the Nazi Party Rallies, the buildings and the difficult relationship with the National Socialist architectural legacy. If you only have one chance to see anything in Nuremberg, make this your priority.

BMW Museum

– For all car enthusiasts, this is an essential stop in Munich. The museum is part of the BMW factory.

Shopping

The main street in Nuremburg, Königstrasse runs from the central station right up to the Hauptmarkt, and is pedestrianized all the way. This is where you will find all of the main shops, restaurants and markets. At the bottom end of Königstrasse, you will find the Craftsmen courtyard where you can buy authentic gifts unique to Nuremberg.
