The Flipper

The Flipper's flight

The technique

Hold the ball like a normal leg break as depicted in the image. This time, however, your thumb does most of the work.

On release, try to mimic the action of clicking your thumb and fingers together to send the ball spinning in a clockwise direction with the seam facing the batsman for that all important straight on 'fizz' off the wicket. It's actually a back-spinner.

Hand position for the Flipper

Richie Benaud said it took him four years before he had the confidence to use it in a match. Good luck!

Magic Moment

Warne bamboozles Bell: 1st test match, Lords 2005

Warne celebrates Ian Bell's dismissalThat man Warne again during the recent series against England. It's a moment Ashes newcomer Ian Bell will want to forget, raising his bat above his head and padding up to a ball which zipped off the turf, hitting him below the knee roll and leaving him plum LBW. He was, of course, expecting the stock leg break. Beautiful disguise from the great man.
