I'm searching for a new job and need to create a cover letter. Any advice on how I can make mine stand out from the competition?
While it’s alright to create a cover letter template, you’ll want to invest time in customising the document for each job opening. The extra effort will show that you take the opportunity seriously and give the businesses a clear idea why you’re an ideal fit for the position.
Use the Internet, trade publications or the library to do some quick research on the organisation that is hiring. Then demonstrate your knowledge of the company and its expertise in the opening paragraph.
For example, "I am responding to your ad in the Oaktown Journal for a manager. I have extensive experience working for organisations specialising in financial services, which gives me a unique understanding of your companies needs."
Avoid rehashing your CV in the cover letter. Instead, focus on aspects of your background that relate directly to the job opportunity. Also highlight any relevant training, classes or professional certification programs you’ve completed.
Use a business letter format, even if you plan to submit your application electronically. A professional yet conversational tone and acknowledgments such as "Mr." and "Ms." will help create a positive first impression. Keep the length to about two paragraphs for e-mail and three to five paragraphs in print form.
Finally, don’t forget to proofread. Many candidates fail to re-read their cover letters to ensure there are no typos or grammatical errors. Ask friends and family members to help review your job search materials. A neat, well written cover letter will demonstrate to firms that you have attention to detail and communication skills – two qualities highly sought after by most hiring managers.
