These instructions are provided to enable customers with an existing Telewest Wireless Router to upgrade the router and PC software. This upgrade will be necessary under the following circumstances:
- PCs running Windows Vista are not supported by the Telewest Wireless PC software.
- The Telewest Wireless Router requires an upgrade to support 20Mbps broadband services.
It is essential to upgrade both Wireless Router and PC software, so please ensure that you complete all the steps in this document.
Please note: The existing settings on your router will be removed by carrying out this process. The new CD will let you set it all up again – hopefully better than before. If you’re a whiz at networks and have logged onto the router and made advanced changes to the firewall settings at any time – these will be lost, you may want to jot them down now so you can add them again after the upgrade.
Note: You should continue to use your Telewest-provided wireless adapters: there is no need to order replacements.
1. Download the new Wireless Router Software
First, use your web browser to download the new router software (http://www.virginmedia.com/updates/wgr614v6_2.5.22_2.5.22.chk).
Save the file (wgr614v6_2.5.22_2.5.22.chk) on your Desktop
Now shut down (switch off) your PC and router.
2: Connect Wireless Router to PC
Ensure that both the router and the PC are switched off.
Now connect a LAN cable between the router and the PC as shown. Use the LAN socket nearest to the power connector on the Wireless Router.

Then switch on the router and then the PC.
3: Log in to Wireless Router
Using a web browser on the PC, type the following into the "Address bar": 192.168.1.1. Then hit Enter.
You will see a window like this

Type virginmedia into the "Name" and virginmedia into the "Security Passphrase" boxes. Then click "Apply".
A pop-up box will appear. Type virginmedia into the "User name" and virginmedia into the "Password" boxes. Then click "OK".

Click on the "Browse" button, and you will see the following window in front of the one above.
Use the "Look in" box to navigate (browse) to the location on your PC (Desktop) where the router software file is stored.
Click on the file name to highlight it as shown, then click on "Open". Now click on "Upload" in the main Netgear window.
You will now see this window:

Double check that you have selected the correct file (wgr614v6_2.5.21_2.5.22.chk), and click "OK".
The router will now begin to upload the software. Once completed, you will be returned to the "Router Upgrade" window:

If you attempted to upload the wrong file, or a corrupt copy, the router will detect this and display an error.
