How do I sort my emails?

Outlook Express automatically lists your emails in date and time order – the most recently received email top of the list.

If you like, you can sort your emails in a number of other ways, which is great when you want to see all the emails from a particular person, or with a specific subject. It’s easy to do: here’s how.

First take a look at the columns for each email:

In the above example, you can see that the columns are labelled From, Subject and Received, There might be other columns as well depending on how your version of Outlook Express is set up.

Next to Received, you’ll see an arrow pointing down. This means that your mail is currently being sorted by the date and time you received it, with the most recent one first. You can change this with one click of your mouse! Here are some examples of how you could sort your emails:

  • If you click on the Received tab, the arrow will change to point up, and the order of the emails changes with it. Now the oldest email is at the top of the list.

  • If you click on the Subject tab, your emails are sorted alphabetically by email subject. If the arrow is pointing up, emails with a subject beginning with A are at the top, and if the arrow is pointing down, the emails are listed in the opposite order. This is useful if you are looking for emails all relating to the same subject (by the way, the RE: prefix isn’t taken into account when the emails are put in alphabetical order). Emails with a blank subject line are all listed together.

  • If you click on the From tab, the emails are sorted alphabetically by sender. If the arrow is pointing up, emails from people beginning with A are at the top, and if the arrow is pointing down, the emails are listed in the opposite order.
