Trojans
While Trojans are commonly perceived as programs designed to allow third parties unauthorised access to the computer systems they infect, they are increasingly being used in order to exploit a computer system to send unsolicited email.
Some Trojans such as Illusion Mailer will open up a port to the Internet that can be used as a proxy server. Any email sent through such a proxy will only be traceable to the system infected by the trojan. It will not be possible to trace the original sender of the email.
We strongly recommend that all of our customers use dedicated Trojan detection software such as Swat-It from LockdownCorp to supplement their anti-virus software and that they conduct regular scans of their system using such software to help reduce the chances of their system being exploited.
