Checking your email settings on a Mac

To check your email settings in Mail for Mac:

  1. Start up Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, select Preferences, as shown below:

  3. From the General window, select Accounts as shown below:

    The following screen displays:

  4. From the left pane, choose the account whose details you want to check
  5. Make sure that the account type is set to POP.
  6. Check that Email address contains the relevant email address you use for this account.

The Description text box can contain any name you want to give to this account, and the Full Name text box can contain any name that you want to appear in the From field when you send an email.

  7. Check that the Incoming Mail Server is correct. This should be as follows, depending on whether your email address ends in @ntlworld or @blueyonder.co.uk:

Incoming mail server for @ntlworld.com: pop.ntlworld.com
Incoming mail server for @blueyonder.co.uk: pop3.blueyonder.co.uk
  8. Make sure that the Account name and Password are correct for this email account. These are the user name and password supplied to you by Virgin Media.
  9. Check that the Outgoing Mail Server is correct. This should be as follows, depending on whether your email address ends in @ntlworld or @blueyonder.co.uk:

Outgoing mail server for @ntlworld.com: smtp.ntlworld.com
Outgoing mail server for @blueyonder.co.uk: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
  10. Click on Server Settings, and make sure that Authentication is set to None.
  11. If you want to check the settings for any other email account, just repeat steps 4-10. Or if you’ve done all the checks you want to, close the screen.

You’ve now made sure everything’s set up how it should be. Try again to send (or receive) an email, and see how you go.
