Can't send and receive mail, or the host server could not be found

When you try to send or receive email, you may receive the error message: Can't send and receive mail, or the host 'smtp.server.name' could not be found.

In this message, the server.name is either ntlworld.com or blueyonder.co.uk. This error message is usually followed by a stop error code e.g. 0x800*****.

This error can have a number of causes – here is a checklist to help you diagnose the problem.

After each of the following steps, check again to see if you can send (or receive) an email.

  1. Check the physical set up of your modem
  2. Check the lights on your modem
  3. Check your computer’s IP address
  4. Check your computer’s Internet options
  5. Check your computer’s firewall settings
  6. Refresh TCP/IP (in Windows XP only)
