Setting up your dial-up connection

Before you go online for the first time, you need to set up your dial-up connection. It’s quick and easy to do. Remember, you can only have one device plugged into your cable modem and working at any one time.

How you set up your dial-up connection depends on what computer you’ve got and which software you use. Take a look below.

Got a Mac? Click here to get set up.

Use Windows Vista? Click here to get set up.

Use Windows 2000? Click here to get set up.

(Just to let you know, we no longer support Windows 98 and Windows ME.)

Use Windows XP? Follow the steps below to get online for the first time:

  1. From your desktop, click on Start and then click on Control Panel.

If it is not already selected, click on Switch to Classic View on the left of the screen.
  2. Double-click on Network Connections, as shown below:

  3. On the left panel of this screen, click on Create a new connection, as shown below:

The New Connection Wizard opening screen displays.
  4. Click on Next, as shown below:

  5. In the next screen, select Connect to the Internet, and click on Next.

  6. In the next screen, click on Set up my connection manually, and click on Next.

  7. In the next screen, type a name for your connection at the ISP Name prompt (for example, Virgin Media), and click on Next. This can be any name that makes the connection recognisable to you – it does not affect the operation of your connection.

  8. Leave the Area code text area empty, then enter one of the following telephone numbers in the Telephone number text area.

If your email address ends in @ntlworld:
Virgin Media free customers enter: 0800 519 0150
Virgin Media pay as you go customers enter: 0845 455 0520

If your email address ends in @blueyonder.co.uk:
    All customers enter: 179
  9. Select United Kingdom (44) from the Country or region code drop-down list.

  10. Click on Next when you have done all this. The following screen displays:

  11. In the User name and Password fields, carefully type in your Virgin Media user name and password (you received these with your Welcome pack). Re-enter the password in the Confirm password field.
  12. Optional

    If required, you can also:

Insert a tick in the Use this name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer check box. This is only needed if more than one user is going to use the same connection, in a small office environment for example.
Insert a tick in the Make this the default Internet connection check box. This is only needed if you have more than one connection, and you want to make this the default.
Insert a tick in the Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection check box. This is only needed if you do not have a firewall already installed on your computer.
  13. Click on Next after you have completed this screen
  14. In the next screen, insert a tick in the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop check box (by clicking on it), and click on Next.

That’s it! As we mentioned above, you only need to do this once to set up your connection. Now, anytime you want to get online, simply double-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop.
