Error 680 – No Dialtone

If you get an error message that says:

Error 680 - No Dialtone

...this means your computer isn’t able to connect to the internet through your phoneline. It may sound as though your modem is dialling repeatedly, before the error message pops up.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Check that your modem cable is securely inserted into the socket at the back of your modem, and into the phone socket.

  2. Check that you haven’t any extra equipment, like a fax machine or answerphone, connected to the line. Sometimes this error pops up if there are too many devices connected to the same phone line.

Also, make sure that no-one else is trying to use the telephone, and that all receivers in the house are placed back on the handset.
  3. Make sure that the telephone socket that your modem is connected to has a dial tone. You can do this by plugging a telephone directly into the phone socket, and checking that you have a dial tone.
  4. Make sure that your modem is trying to call the correct telephone number. To do this, dial the appropriate number from the options below.

If your email address ends in @ntlworld:
Virgin Media free customers enter: 0800 519 0150
Virgin Media pay as you go customers enter: 0845 455 0520

If your email address ends in @blueyonder.co.uk:
    All customers enter: 179

You should hear a high pitched 'screeching' noise (this 'screeching' is the sound of the modem answering).

If you don’t hear this noise, or you hear an unobtainable tone or a voice, then it could be that the number you are trying to call is incorrect. In this case, you need to check your computer’s dial-up settings. To do this, click on the link for your operating system.
