Why can I only connect intermittently?

If you find you’re able to link to some pages but not others, this could be caused by what are called proxy settings. Virgin Media uses a proxy server to help direct your Internet traffic through the most efficient route, and so deliver your web pages faster.

However, it is possible that proxy server information left on your computer by other ISP's may interfere with your connection.

Got a Mac? Click here and follow the steps.

Use a PC? Follow the steps below to make sure that proxy settings are not affecting your connection:

  1. Double-click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop to open a web browser:

By the way, the screens shown are Windows XP screens. If you have another version of Windows, the steps described in this section are the same, although the screens will look a bit different.
  2. In Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then click on Internet Options.

    The Internet Options window displays.
  3. Click on the Connections tab (shown below)

  4. Click on LAN Settings… (shown below)

The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window displays.
  5. If you have a proxy set, this screen looks similar to the window shown below, that is with one or both boxes in the proxy server section ticked. To remove the proxy setting, simply untick Use a proxy server for your LAN.

If the check box is already unticked, there is no need to make any changes.
  6. Click on OK, and then click on OK again to exit the Internet Options window.

Still have intermittent connection problems? Try these steps...

  • Are you an advanced user? If so, you can use the procedure given in Why can’t I link from an open web page?
  • Are you using a USB connection? USB can sometimes cause an intermittent Internet connection. We recommend that you switch to Ethernet to get the best possible results with Virgin Broadband.
Click on Ethernet vs USB for details on how to connect over Ethernet.
